Every now and then you get the opportunity to watch something truly amazing happen. As a photographer, I get to capture the essence of amazing things all the time. Raw emotion, if you will. The first time 3 brothers meet their sister. The love between an elder couple. The beautiful chaos & happiness a young family radiates. The excitement & scary emotions a couple share during a maternity session.
This particular couple came into my life a little over a year ago when we planned their wedding in 3 short months. If you know Carrie & Tom, you know how incredible they are. They are easy going, go-with-the-flow, genuinely happy people. Which are all good traits, when you have a 4th of July-backyard-wedding and it rains right at the start of the ceremony. I’m talking a complete downpour. But… that is another story, for a different day.
Typically when I do a photo session, I try to post a sneak peek on my blog, within a week of the shoot. This shoot, however, was unique. Although it may appear to be a common maternity session, their story goes a bit deeper.
Carrie & Tom are due with their first child on July 6th (almost exactly one year after their wedding) The baby will be a little girl, and her name will be Charlotte.
At the same mid point check up where they were told the gender of the baby, they also discovered some startling news. Charlotte would be born with Omphalocele. Omphalocele (pronounced uhm-fa-lo-seal) is a birth defect of the abdominal wall. The infant’s intestines, liver, or other organs stick outside of the belly through the belly button. The organs are covered in a thin sac.
The emotions first time parents go through during a pregnancy hit both highs and lows. To add this to their story… well, most would be terrified. Now let me clarify… They were offered to terminate the pregnancy when they found out this news… And although I am sure Carrie and Tom were indeed scared, they prayed about it and quickly decided that God planted this baby in their lives for a reason. They decided that they were going to give this little girl life & love, with everything they possibly could!
Carrie is scheduled to have Charlotte next Thursday on June 29th. Please pray for them as surgeries will be in the near future. Pray that Carrie heals physically and give her the strength needed to make it through the first couple days where Charlotte will be a different hospital than her. Pray for Tom as he helps make the right decisions for his little girl & give him the energy he needs to help both his daughter and his wife. Pray for their entire family as they surround them with love. And pray for little Charlotte. That she thrives showing resilience while continuing to grow stronger each day.
Carrie & Tom you will make the best parents and I can’t wait to watch your story unfold. <3
